Ganymede is the collective name given to the many towns in the midlands of Olympus and Elysium, and is strenuously rejected by the inhabitants of those towns and villages. The name is viewed as a symbol of the Elysium upper classes exploitation of the middle and lower classes, since it is essentially a collective name the upper classes gave to the settlements supplying the highlands.
Like other midlands settlements on other continents, logging and limited farming are the main activities of the region known as Ganymede. The lack of sufficient food production to sustain the local population was a decisive factor in the failure of the 3037 insurrection.
In the year 3037 an armed uprising began in the region, initially small arms verses police and then the peacekeeping forces sent to the area. Publicly the people of the towns denounced the separatists, though it was expected that many were sympathisers. Disparate militant groups in the region militarised, the source of the military grade weapons can only be speculated at. It has been suggested that militias were involved, or that caches of weaponry (hidden in case of planetary invasion) were discovered and looted, or that weapons were smuggled to these groups. The conflict escalated until battle-mech intervention was required, and even then was initially underestimated resulting in the loss of several scout-mechs. The uprising was only put-down by an occupying force of troops and heavier mechs, using a strategy of denying supply and shelter to the rebels, intense recognisance in force, as well as vastly superior firepower. This took most of the year 3037.
There was some communication between the disparate militant groups but they should be considered separate movements each focused upon the needs of the midlands regions and towns they were fighting for. The uprising was not one united movement.
