Daedalus Continent, Industrial and Mining Center
The original continent selected for colonization is currently called Daedalus and nicknamed Old Olympus but was originally called Olympus when it was first discovered to be a mountainous plateau. The continent is the heavy industrial center of Planet Strata and the lowlands around Daedalus are the most heavily explored and utilized for mining.
The original settlement is currently called Icarus located on the highlands of Daedalus. Icarus includes the main spaceport (Daedalus Spaceport) of the planet as well as being a major transport hub for the planet and a large industrial city.
The cities of Iapyx and Perdix were founded in the midlands of Daedalus to better access the mineral supplies coming from the lowlands. Rail links between the three cities and the surrounding towns are the main form of transportation on the continent of Daedalus with airships and tracked landtrains being used to transport goods to and from the lowlands.
The mining colony now named Argyre is the largest civilian lowlands settlement and also the deepest permanent civilian settlement in the lowlands. The largest known military settlement in the lowlands is Tartarus Base. Argyre currently serves as a hub for mining expeditions and for ore transport now that the local mineral deposits around it have being tapped out. Early attempts to convert the settlement into a water mining centre are also underway. Construction of a permanent rail link from Argyre to Perdix to replace the landtrain convoys is in progress.
Refined ore, heavy vehicles and industrial mechs are the most prominent products of Daedalus but a wide range of heavy industries are present.
Contrary to popular perception Daedalus is agriculturally self sufficient and does not import food to support its population. In fact Daedalus is a major exporter of foods, typically bulk grains cereals and corn grown in the highlands of Daedalus. The continent of Daedalus also supports high density animal farming in the midlands fed from the produce of the highlands. What Daedalus does import are all manner of specialty foods as opposed to the bulk produce produced locally. The local produce is available in bulk but provides little variety due to the focus upon mass production.
